The Silk Road marketplace opened in February 2011 on the Tor network it was the most notorious darknet market, using Bitcoin for anonymous illegal transactions. focused primarily on drug sales.
The Silk Road was later shut down by the FBI in October 2013, with its founder Ross Ulbricht arrested in San Francisco while operating under the online pseudonym "Dread Pirate Roberts". Ulbricht was later sentenced to life in prison in 2015.
In January 2025 he was granted a presidential pardon and released from prison.
