Agora marketplace launched in 2013 on the Tor network and quickly rose to prominence as one of the largest darknet markets. Agora was unaffected by Operation Onymous in 2014 The operation involved the police forces of 17 countries and lead to the seizer and shut down several of the main dark web market sites at the time.
After the closure of Evolution Market in 2015, Agora became the leading marketplace for a short time before shutting down in August 2015, citing technical concerns and the need to protect its users.
Despite its relatively short lifespan, Agora played a major role in shaping the darknet economy and grew the use of Bitcoin as the primary currency for anonymous online transactions untill it was recently surpassed by a privacy focused crypto Monero (XMR)
